Biography
Yunmo Zhang (Feburary 15, 2002) is a Chinese-American flutist who balances a solo presence with extensive orchestral and chamber music experience. He is currently completing his Master Soliste degree at the Haute École de Musique de Lausanne (HEMU) in Switzerland, where he studies with José-Daniel Castellon and Loïc Schneider. He also co-founded and serves as the artistic director of the Bex Music Festival in Switzerland.
Mr. Zhang's artistry has been recognized with significant upcoming engagements, including a solo appearance with the l'Orchestre de Chambre de Lausanne scheduled for the 2026-2027 season. He is also currently in the process of recording a solo album as a core component of his master's program at HEMU.
A laureate of several international and national competitions, Mr. Zhang was awarded the 2nd prize at the 2024 Concours National d'Exécution Musicale in Switzerland. He has demonstrated his high-level musicianship as a semifinalist at the 2025 Cluj International Competition in Romania, a second-round competitor at the prestigious 2023 Concours International d'Exécution Musicale de Genève, and a semifinalist at the 2022 International Flute Competition "Severino Gazzelloni" in Italy. His history of accolades began in the United States, where he won first prizes at both the Houston Young Artist and Houston Flute Club competitions.
As an orchestral musician, Mr. Zhang has performed as principal flute with the Blaricum Festival Orchestra in the Netherlands and as second flute and piccolo with the Sinfonietta de Lausanne. He has also been a replacement musician for the celebrated Verbier Festival Orchestra. His foundational orchestral leadership was developed as principal flute of the Houston Youth Symphony from 2015 to 2018.
Mr. Zhang’s musical education is truly international. Before moving to Switzerland for his Bachelor's and Master's degrees, he was formed in the esteemed French flute school at the Conservatoire à Rayonnement Régional de Paris. There, he earned a Diploma Concertiste in 2023 in the class of Magali Mosnier and a Diplôme d'études musicales in 2021 with Vincent Lucas and Stéphane Limonaire, both awarded unanimously. He began his advanced studies in the United States at the High School for the Performing and Visual Arts in Houston.
A dedicated and curious person, Yunmo is fluent in English, Chinese, and French. When he is not practicing or performing, he believes in maintaining a balanced life by unwinding with a good book and staying active at the gym.
