Biography
Chinese-American flutist Yunmo Zhang (b. 2002) is a soloist and artistic leader whose 2026–2027 season is highlighted by a debut as a soloist with l’Orchestre de Chambre de Lausanne. In August 2026, he will join the Lucerne Festival Academy as a member of the Lucerne Festival Contemporary Orchestra. Yunmo is also the Co-founder and Artistic Director of the Bex Music Festival in Switzerland.
Yunmo's artistry has been recognized on the international competition circuit. He was a distinguished second-round competitor at the 2023 Concours de Genève and was awarded 2nd Prize at the 2024 Concours National d’Exécution Musicale in Switzerland. Additionally, he reached the semifinals of the 2025 Cluj International Music Competition in Romania. On the orchestral stage, he has served as Principal Flutist of the Blaricum Festival Orchestra in the Netherlands.
A specialist in contemporary Chinese aesthetics and extended flute techniques, Yunmo performed as a soloist in Pierre Boulez’s …explosante-fixe… with the HEMU Contemporary Ensemble in early 2026. His artistic research includes an in-depth structural analysis of Berio’s Sequenza I. He is currently recording a solo album dedicated to contemporary Chinese repertoire, featuring works by Chen Xiaoyong.
Yunmo was formed in the esteemed French flute school at the Conservatoire à Rayonnement Régional de Paris, where he earned a Diplôme Concertiste in the class of Magali Mosnier and a DEM with Vincent Lucas and Stéphane Limonaire, both awarded unanimously. He is currently completing his Master Soliste at the Haute École de Musique de Lausanne (HEMU) under the tutelage of José-Daniel Castellon and Loïc Schneider.
Fluent in English, Chinese, and French, Yunmo balances his professional life with literature and fitness.
